Canna-rita

Canna-rita

Sometimes you need an easy, icy, DIY drink infused with cannabis, but you haven’t made cannabis-infused alcohol ahead of time. Here’s an alternative method to infuse juice with cannabis concentrate in a no-fuss, no alcohol, 20-minute recipe.

Cannabis-infused margarita magic!

Ingredients

  • Decarboylate Concentrate
  • 1 g High-quality cannabis concentrate (Resin, shatter, or distillate. If using RSO, start at step 6.)

  • .5 g (about 1 teaspoon) liquid sunflower lecithin

  • 5 drops Orange oil extract

  • 2 cups vegetable oil (more or less, for the oil bath, depends on the size of your pot)

  • 1 oz. (1 can) frozen limeade

  • 1 cup filtered water

  • 2 cups ice cubes

  • 1/2 cup Kosher salt (to rim the glasses)

Directions:

  • Pour a few inches of oil into a medium saucepan, enough so that a heat-proof glass jar placed in the center will be halfway immersed in the oil.
  • Heat to a steady 275° degrees, using a candy thermometer to keep an eye on the temperature.
  • Put the cannabis concentrate in a heatproof bowl or jar, then carefully place the bowl or jar into the oil bath in the saucepan.
  • Heat cannabis extract, stirring it thoroughly with a bamboo skewer or glass stirring stick as it warms to evenly decarboxylate the oil, as the sides of the glass will be hotter than the center.
  • Continue to heat and stir until bubbles have stopped “maximum peak formation” (i.e., when bubbling activity slows visibly), timing will vary depending on what kind of concentrate you’re using. Remove the glass dish from the oil bath carefully, using a towel to protect your hands and to wipe the oil off the outside of the glass as you pull it from the bath.
  • Add an equal amount of liquid sunflower lecithin to the still warm oil in the glass (about 2 tsp.), along with the drops of orange oil. Stir vigerously. The mixture will foam slightly as the lecithin breaks down the oils, then will clarify into an amber liquid.
  • Add the concentrate liquid to the frozen limeade and water in a blender, then slowly add 2 cups ice (1-2 cubes at a time) while continuing to blend.
  • Salt the rims of margarita glasses (wet the rims of the glass with a wedge of lime, then twist the glass rims on a plate of salt), then pour your canna-rita into a fun glass (a traditional margarita glass is supposed to look like an upside-down sombrero!), garnish with a lime and/or cannabis leaves (if you’ve got ‘em) and enjoy!

Notes

  • *The potency of your drinks will depend on the strength of your cannabis concentrate. I ended up with 5 1/2 cups liquid, which is equal to roughly 44 oz., infused with 1g of 80% THC concentrate.  800mg divided by the 44oz is about 18mg per oz., so a 6oz. drink is then about 109mg THC per drink (or just use this dosage estimator). Recipe makes a little more than seven 6 oz. drinks. Cheers!
